Welcome to Creative Herts Music Therapy

My name is Debbie Pawluczuk, and I am a HCPC certified music therapist (Reg.No. AS018741). Since completing the Masters of Music Therapy programme accredited by Goldsmiths University with the Nordoff and Robbins Centre in London,  I have been delivering Creative Music Therapy sessions in St Albans,  Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, the North London boroughs, as well as online.

With the mission to put each person's innate musicality and capability for creative expression at the centre of the therapeutic process, I deliver a variety of tailored session formats, designed to heal unexpressed emotions, to empower, and to foster social connection through building a trustful and mutual therapeutic relationship with each client.

What is Creative Music Therapy

Creative Music Therapy (CMT) is a clinical, improvisational approach to music therapy that focuses on the interactive and collaborative creation of music between a therapist and a client.  It is most commonly associated with the Nordoff-Robbins music centred approach, which is built on the belief that every person—regardless of illness or disability—possesses an inborn sensitivity to music that can be used for personal growth and healing.

Core Elements of CMT

Active Improvisation  - apart from listening to pre-recorded songs, sessions revolve around spontaneous music-making. The therapist often uses instruments like the piano or guitar to follow and support the client's sounds or rhythms.

Innate Musicality - a core concept in CMT is that we are all born musical, and music represents a healthy core within us that can respond to music even when verbal communication, physical or cognitive functions are impaired.

Non-Verbal Communication - it is particularly effective for individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, or emotional trauma because it bypasses the need for spoken language, allowing emotions to be expressed through sound and rhythm created by a person.

Relationship-Based Therapy - the therapeutic progress is measured by the evolving musical relationship and interaction between the therapist and the client.

Primary Applications of CMT

Developmental Support - originally created for children with disabilities, CMT is used to help improve social skills, self-awareness, and emotional well-being.

Neurorehabilitation - recent research suggests that CMT can promote brain development and functional connectivity in preterm infants.

Mental Health - CMT is used in psychiatric care and for individuals seeking a creative path to process emotional difficulties or grief.

Elderly Care CMT helps improve the quality of life and engagement for older patients, including those with dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions.

How I work as a CMT Therapist

I am dedicated to creating personalised therapeutic experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds who enjoy music and can take part in regular musical interactions.

During musical interactions, both vocal and instrumental, we establish a unique creative connection over time, through which we can actively work on overcoming any existing challenges related to mental health and wellbeing - anxiety, loss, identity, social isolation, or living with cognitive and/or physical difficulties.

Thanks to a detailed assessment, I ensure that each therapy session is tailored to meet the individual needs of each person. From the point of  initial assessment, through ongoing reevaluation of applied formats, I provide a completely tailored therapeutic approach that ensures a transformative experience for my clients.

This way, the therapeutic process allows the clients to discover their existing strengths, abilities and inner resources, regardless of their difficulties, which empowers them to take these postivie outcomes from therapy into thier daily lives. I am dedicated to finding the unique way of interacting with each client, based on their needs and preferences, in order to help them reach their full potential, and form better connections with others in their lives.

In Other Words ...

"Music can heal. It can do more than just ease the pain. It can throw a lifeline to kids who can't be reached in any other way."
